The Rotary Club of San Francisco Board of Directors met on June 28, 2022 via Zoom. President Mary Liu called the meeting to order at 12:02 PM. Stacey Poole, Secretary, recorded the minutes.
In attendance were President Mary, President-Elect Christopher Wiseman, Gary Dales, Sunny Singh, Lisa Christian, Ed Shenkan, Brian Lan, Nancy Graydon, Jeff Lerner, Miranti Ojong, JT Forbus, and Stacey Poole, constituting a quorum. Absent was Bob Hermann. Also in attendance were incoming Board members Margaret Miley, Wendy Shew, and Frank Yoke.
Climate Crisis and the Assisi Lifestyle: At the end of 2021, an in-depth study was done by the Kantar Group on concern and responses to the climate crisis. In the United States, 74% of respondents said they were concerned or very concerned about climate change. However, only 49% said they were willing to change their lifestyle to address the crisis. And when it comes down to specifics of what was “very important”: 32% said reducing energy consumption; 25% supported public transportation; 23% noted reducing travel by plane; and 18% identified reducing meat consumption.
Clearly, there is the desire to address the issue but we (the developed economies) do not want to give up our lifestyle. Part of this is a function of education (what can we do and why), and part is simply inertia (we all have full agendas).
President Christopher Wiseman (Nonprofit Management | Glaucoma Research Foundation) called the meeting to order at 12:17 PM and welcomed everyone attending either online or in person inside the Anzu Restaurant. Due to the large number of Visiting Rotarians and Special Guests today, President Christopher had all visitors in person and online stand for a big round of applause.
In Solidarity with Ukraine
What a moving meeting! The room and the agenda were packed full! Club members and guests stood in solidarity as the National Anthem of Ukraine was powerfully sung by Natalie Ter-Agopova, a soprano soloist, who is a choir mate of Ann Daugherty (Financial Services: Private Trading | IBN Financial Services). Brightening the room were two very large baskets of sunflowers (the Ukrainian national flower), thoughtfully donated by Harold Hoogasian (Retail: Florist | Hoogasian Flowers).
