The People of Action Educational Series held its third offering on May 14, 2020 in this new, Zoom-based opportunity for learning. Anita Stangl was the speaker of the day on the topic of Local Clubs and Rotary International.
Anita looked briefly at our Club's history and structure and linked them to the Rotary International history and background. Her theme was that together, we work to make lasting change in our communities and around the world. There are 35,000 autonomous Rotary clubs throughout the world, and each works on projects that are of special interest to them. And we also work jointly on projects important to all. Our number one achievement via the combined force of the 1,200,000 members of Rotary International has been the eradication of polio with a few exceptions across the globe.
Rotary International is headquartered in Evanston, Illinois and has six international offices. Our Club prides itself on an almost even ratio of men to women: 52% men to 48% women and a number of women have served our Club as president. There has not been so far a female president for Rotary International.
After much discussion and input from clubs around the world, Rotary International has agreed that the Six Areas of Focus for all of Rotary are:
- Promoting peace
- Fighting disease
- Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
- Saving mothers and children
- Supporting education and
- Growing local economies.
The above areas are not limitations; rather, they showcase the direction in which the membership has agreed to proceed.
